Our friends @garstonhops reside just sixty miles as the crow flies from Milford Sound. Forming a connection to the regions from which we source our hops means so much to us and we work to carry that energy through to our beer. So, there wasn’t a chance we’d be in Garston and not take the short ride to see this iconic fiord. Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most majestic attractions and has been described as the 8th wonder of the World. It resides within the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site. Carved by glaciers over millennia, sheer cliffs rise vertically from the dark waters, cloaked in lush rainforests that seem to defy gravity. As the sound narrows, the sense of isolation intensifies, creating a profound feeling of being transported to a world untouched by time. With rainbows at every turn and more waterfalls than you can count, visiting carries an almost mythical grandeur, leaving the Tree House team feeling like we had entered a momentary simulation. The memory of our visit to the Milford Sound will always reside in the Tree House beer that carries its namesake. We feel fortunate to have spent time in this space and thank our friends from Garston for encouraging the ambitious visit. It was the perfect conclusion to our first chapter in New Zealand for the essential journey to hop selection.

Bombe Village is named after the Bombe mountains in the Bensa region of Sidama Ethiopia, where Ngiusse Nare produced this coffee 2,300 meters above sea level. In our second year back at @garstonhops , we had a transformative learning experience. Discovering the astonishing difference between Garston Hops, grown in the Southland, and hops grown in Nelson has profoundly impacted our brewing endeavors. We find that the only way to best represent how these hops ultimately impact a beer’s outcome is to get to know the growers and understand the intention behind their decisions in the field each growing season. Connecting the dots between how a hop expresses itself in the field and how it translates into a finished beer is one of the most important things we do. We had an awesome experience with Blaž, James, and Krystella, who once again showed us some amazing Southland hospitality as we toasted to a batch of Trail Garston Cascade from the viewpoint that graces its can. Trail Garston Cascade is currently available. Not only is it the first beer to express Garston hops here in the United States, but it remains a connection to a faraway place that means so much to us. We hope that you too can connect the dots and take the journey in each can you enjoy.

Today, we are pleased to introduce our Bock, King of the Mountain. A labor of love, King of the Mountain was a collaborative effort on the Tree House brew deck. Mild, up-front malt flavor is accompanied by soft carbonation and slight hints of earthier notes, including pine, resin, and tobacco. Dark cherry and semisweet caramel flavors complement this bouquet with an additional character reminiscent of Concord grape and grapefruit. Today, we are pleased to introduce Quintet. Originally brewed in February 2019 and barreled in March of the same year, Quintet is a pure expression of the eldest barrels in our ecosystem. A lot has changed since 2019; the world has undergone a rapid and ongoing transformation. Bridging the gap between then and now in a beer is a bit of magic and beautifully encapsulates the power of our craft. Like age in us humans, the beer emerges with a few tired edges, but for every dusty note, a complex chocolate character presents itself that would otherwise be impossible in a much younger beer. In addition, hints of chocolate wafer cookies, bourbon-soaked candy, and dark chocolate fudge lend texture and steal to this most sage offering. Similar to bourbon, excessive time in barrels can often have diminishing returns. Age is not linear with quality. But Quintet expresses remarkable resilience and is a beautiful example of what is possible with extreme patience and studied barrel-picking in the art and craft of barrel-aged beer. We hope you enjoy it and appreciate the history contained within each sip. Tree House is delighted to bring you one of our favorite varietal offerings - the pink bourbon, this time working with producer Andres Muñoz from Finca Progreso; this coffee is nothing short of the progress our coffee department has made with relationships with farmers and getting to roast and brew mind-blowing varietals for you. Pink bourbon is a hybrid Ethiopian landrace varietal first discovered in Colombia. It is highlighted by its strikingly pink cherry, yellow fruit tangy sweetness, and strong floral and tropical aroma. They are also known to perform well at cool, high-altitude locations–resulting in an achievement that is truly in the clouds. This effort of subtle refinement with this coffee from producer to the roastery glimmers in the cup, as the team here at Tree House had no trouble picking out notes of apple butter, sugar cane, and pomelo.
