Trail Garston Cascade

You will not have a beer like this anywhere else. The beer in this can is the result of extensive travel in search of the best and most unique expressions of our favorite hops. Garston Hops is located in the Southland of New Zealand, hundreds of miles removed from any other Kiwi hop farm.

Trail Garston Cascade is a beer unlike anything else we make. It's a concise expression of the brewery we've worked so hard to become. Beneath a wave of tropical citrus and pine lies a zippy Pilsner that snaps into a clean finish after its hoppy introduction. Cascade is an American legend, bred in the 1950s and eventually finding a welcome home in the fledgling craft beer movement of the 1980s. Its citrus and pine character played a significant role in shaping a distinctly American hop profile and acclimating palates worldwide to a new kind of hoppy beer. You can imagine our excitement when we stumbled across Garston Hop Farm in New Zealand and tried their Cascade so far from its home on the American West Coast. Its character was at once familiar, yet deeply influenced by their terroir and techniques. Meeting growers in person and trying their hops off the bine helps us understand the intention behind their decisions in the field each growing season. Connecting the dots between how a hop expresses itself in the field and how it translates into a finished beer is one of the most important things we do. It has been an honor to be the first brewery to utilize their incredible Cascade. It brings us back to that first meeting every time we pop a can open.

5 photos: Magic of Garston, Indeed!

Magic of Garston, Indeed! A chance encounter in 2023 led to the first import of @garstonhops to the United States by Tree House. Each year since we’ve committed to supporting the small hop farm located in the incredibly scenic settlement of Garston, New Zealand just an hour south of Queenstown and 400 miles removed from the nearest hop garden. The beers made with Garston Hops carry an incredible singularity not found anywhere else in the world. Whether Trail Garston Cascade or Nelson Many Ways - Garston, do not miss a Tree House beer when they come through in fleeting moments throughout the year. Pictured is a week old can of Magic of Garston enjoyed at Welcome Rock high above the garden just seven days after it was packaged. The thrill of getting to enjoy a beer in the place that its character originated ten thousand miles from home is indescribable- we hope you get a sense of the magic in each can.

In our second year back at @garstonhops , we had a transformative learning experience. Discovering the astonishing difference between Garston Hops, grown in the Southland, and hops grown in Nelson has profoundly impacted our brewing endeavors. We find that the only way to best represent how these hops ultimately impact a beer’s outcome is to get to know the growers and understand the intention behind their decisions in the field each growing season. Connecting the dots between how a hop expresses itself in the field and how it translates into a finished beer is one of the most important things we do. We had an awesome experience with Blaž, James, and Krystella, who once again showed us some amazing Southland hospitality as we toasted to a batch of Trail Garston Cascade from the viewpoint that graces its can. Trail Garston Cascade is currently available. Not only is it the first beer to express Garston hops here in the United States, but it remains a connection to a faraway place that means so much to us. We hope that you too can connect the dots and take the journey in each can you enjoy.
