The Kinini Coffee Cooperation comprises 85% women farmers, who pool their efforts between neighboring towns and villages to improve overall quality and generational impact on their communities. Collaboration and teamwork make Tree House thrive, so when we heard about this effort, we could not miss the chance to join the journey. The name of this coffee sounds familiar. Previously, we've used this washed coffee as a component of our Aurora blend, but with how the samples were tasting this harvest year, we wanted to put this coffee out on its own. Rwanda also happens to be a favorite origin of coffee for our head roaster, so there is all the more reason to highlight this coffee on its own. Enjoy notes of chamomile, dried apricot, and cola. For years, we have shared our excitement about the distinct terroir in hops we’ve experienced worldwide—our next stop in New Zealand exemplifies that excitement. Once home to 3000 milking cows, Mount Ella Station, on the fringe of Nelson Lakes National Park, is now home to one of New Zealand’s largest - and most scenic - hop gardens. It’s called Nelson Lakes, a sister garden of Freestyle hops, and some of the best hops in the world grow there. The long drive from Upper Moutere to Nelson Lakes is spectacular. Winding roads weave through lush native forests, with glimpses of sparkling rivers and rugged mountain peaks in the distance. As you approach the garden in the heart of the Mātakitaki Valley, panoramic views frame the dramatic Southern Alps. The air is crisp and fresh, and the road reveals even more breathtaking scenery with each new turn. Upon arriving at the majestic farm, Jason, Nelson Lake’s General Manager, greeted us. We were struck by Jason’s hands-on approach as he showed us around the hop gardens to enjoy several first and second-year plants and our beloved Motueka and Nelson. Getting to enjoy these hops in this field in this place was spectacular! Several days later, we compared pelletized hops from Nelson Lakes and the distant Sunrise Valley, and the differences could not be more stark. The hops grown at Nelson Lakes carried heavily amplified but familiar notes from each cultivar. Nelson presented with a massively juicy white wine note, and the lemon-lime characteristics from Motueka were incredibly intense. More so than terroir, Nelson Lakes seems to have locked in on an incredibly potent expression of familiarity in these varieties. Hops do not express themselves the same way during brewing as they do when growing in the field or even when they’re processed into pellets. Having visited Nelson Lakes, we now fully understand what we need to make the best beer possible with these hops and carry a deeper respect and admiration for the team behind them. We were delighted to have shared this experience with our team, and soon, you’ll join us in sharing what we experienced in your glass of Tree House. Next stop: Upper Moutere

Originally devised alongside Juice Machine in 2014 for the Extreme Beer Fest, it has been brewed hundreds of times since with dozens of iterations. In addition to becoming our flagship coffee-based offering, it spurned the idea for @treehousecoffeecompany Roastery, which has not only elevated our coffee beer game but blossomed into a singular operation that crafts unique and delicious coffees that stand up to our beer.
