The Tree House beers Kia Ora and Haere Ra were both New Zealand beers in the truest sense because they contained all New Zealand-grown ingredients. And so our journey brought us next to @gladfieldmalt. Gladfield Malt, established by Doug and Gabi Michael in 2004, is a 100% family-owned maltings. The Michaels are a fifth-generation family of barley growers in the heart of the Canterbury Plains. They describe their malthouse as “New Zealand Craft Malts for Passionate Brewers.” That’s right up our alley. So, we worked arduously with the FDA to become the only brewery to importing Gladfield’s singular malts into the United States. Upon our arrival, we were struck immediately by Gabi’s Kiwi hospitality. In their office, we sampled dozens of unique malts, including Manuka Smoked Malt, Toffee Malt, Supernova Malt, Shepherds Delight Malt, and more. Following our time sampling malt, Doug Michaels himself gave us a gracious and extensive tour of the malting facility. It was clear from the moment we met Doug that he is ingrained in every facet of the malting process and has a deep passion for producing high-quality and distinctive malts. He was gracious with his time and shared the history and energy behind Gladfield. Doug shared that they are on the path to becoming carbon neutral and that the facility works directly with one hundred and fifty farmers in the Canterbury Plains. Following our facility tour, we were welcomed into Doug and Gabi’s home, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch and Gabi’s tasty homebrew! Upon leaving Gladfield, we felt a deeper connection to the beers we make with their malt and a memory that will energize our brewing endeavors for years to come. We are working on the next batches of beer made with these distinctive malts, and we hope you can appreciate the care and attention that goes into each of them, not only from Tree House but everyone in our supplier network.
Haere Rā is a double IPA rendition of our recent Kia Ora release. Whereas Kia Ora's namesake translates as a versatile Māori-language salutation, Haere Rā is a Māori-language valediction. Like its predecessor, Haere Rā utilizes New Zealand-grown and malted Gladfield Malt—imported into the United States for the first time. In your glass, you hold a beer that is truly unlike any other in the USA.
Haere Rā's carefully selected blend of Riwaka, Pacific Sunrise, and Nelson hops offers an experience to taste the singular local flavors of New Zealand-grown ingredients. Prepare to enjoy juicy notes of passion fruit, kiwi, sun-kissed lime, and sweet citrus—all washing over your palate in a pleasing and easy-drinking disposition. Haere Rā is a testament to our ongoing pursuit of providing you with the best and most interesting beer experiences possible.
To say that our travels to New Zealand have been influential in our recent brewing endeavor would be an understatement. Not only are the hops grown there produce incredible and unique flavors, but they can vary dramatically based on the farm and the wildly different micro-climates experienced on the South Island. It is within this variation that true magic can occur, and we have spent the last several years curating it into a selection of beers that we are so excited about. These are all currently available, as of 11.12.23, but they will not last long, and some may not be made again for a full year due to the difficulty and limited supply of their ingredients. God of the Forest - Select Riwaka + Motueka honoring the largest Kauri tree in New Zealand (and the world) Kia Ora - All New Zealand-grown ingredients, a first on US soil. Combines Riwaka, Pacific Sunrise, and Nelson in a blissful pale ale. Magic of Garston - Magic of Garston features hops exclusively grown at this tiny Southland farm. Hundreds of miles removed from other New Zealand growers, these Garston-grown hops exhibit a character that is unlike anything else. A true double IPA experience. Manuka - Mānuka is a brilliant beer and a testament to Tree House's unwillingness to let raw material costs deter our brewing endeavor. Containing literal buckets of this renowned New Zealand honey, it contains a depth of character that is a true joy. Silver Fern - Peacharine + Nelson + a proprietary blend of New Zealand-grown hops. The gem of our New Zealand-centric lineup. It brings us so much joy to make these beverages. We hope their stories can add to your enjoyment of them. Thank you for reading - have a great Sunday.
