Our journey with Eggers began long before our trip when Kem Eggers visited Tree House during New Zealand’s off-season and boldly proclaimed his operation the king of Riwaka. A bold statement indeed, but one we could appreciate. This memorable interaction made it clear we had to visit the farm on our trip. You might recognize the name from many ‘hazy style’ IPA descriptions over the past few years. We had used Eggers Hops quite a bit before this trip, but we don’t rely on others’ marketing speak. It was crucial to see the farm firsthand and get a true sense of Egger’s operation. The Eggers family has been growing hops in Upper Moutere longer than anyone else. Their website proudly states, “Six generations on since our founding father planted the first rhizome in Upper Moutere - hop resin still runs through our veins. That collective knowledge and experience manifests itself in every harvest through blood, sweat, and tears to produce a quality product.” Back home on the farm, Kem’s confident nature was noticeably subdued, and our visit was memorable for all the right reasons. Eggers takes a survival-of-the-fittest approach, cultivating tens of thousands of Riwaka plants and seeking the best expressions to propagate. It’s an artful method, full of pride. Kem and his family believe that their suboptimal soil conditions stress the hops, making them more expressive than their pampered counterparts. This theory holds merit—grapes that undergo stress often produce better vintages. We spent hours in the field here getting our hands on some truly mind-bending Riwaka. We selected several other intriguing stand-out cultivars and will work to bring you these elevated expressions in your cans of Tree House over the next year. We also experienced green, weird, underdeveloped, and forgettable Riwaka. Kem is aware of this and embraces it. He looks to us for feedback on the plants he identifies as the best, intending to manage only the finest expressions of this beloved variety eventually. Hopefully, our input will help him get there sooner. Individualism makes craft beer great, and Eggers Hops embodies it perfectly.
