🌲🔥🌲 Little Fire Oak is a malty yet crisp Helles Lager, bookended by the bounty of the forest. A vigorous pour creates a mountain of sticky foam and propels notes of fresh-baked bread, a hint of noble spice, and wisps of campfire smoke into the air. Following behind its crushable body is a dry, tannic finish that pulls us back for another sip. Beers like this take their time in the conditioning process, but once they’re at their peak, my, do they go down easy. Pure lager magic.
A well-made German Helles has a wonderful duality of maltiness followed by a snappy finish, and Little Fire Oak adds to that complexity with a portion of smoked malt in the grist. It is then conditioned in our oak foeder for a lengthy slumber. Porous wood does something to beer that is hard to explain. It softens the edges and leaves a quiet tannin behind, the way good oak should. Neither of these additions to its character is overpowering; it's supremely drinkable with a wonderful note of campfire smoke. We want to take a moment to thank the City of Bamberg, Germany, for preserving the ancient tradition of smoking malt. A few revered breweries carry on this practice today, and Little Fire Oak is a beer we humbly offer into this canon of styles. After fermentation, we transfer Little Fire into our oak foeder for an extended rest, picking up notes of woody spice while simultaneously softening its body. This beer explores the intersection of smoky beechwood and tannic American oak within a zippy traditional German Helles recipe.
