Land of the Dark Night Sky combines our newest selections of the most coveted hops from the Pacific Northwest in the United States and from the Nelson region of New Zealand. Inspired by the impossibly dark skies found near both areas, Land of the Dark Night Sky oozes with expressive hop character thanks to a substantial tweak to our hot-side hopping approach.
Our travels to distant lands in search of understanding hop growers inform so much of what we do. Our passion for photography also graces our work in many places. A trip up Quandary Peak, which towers high above Billy Goat Hop farm, produced the image on the can for Trail Billy Goat Cascade. An image of the Oregon coast, just adjacent to the green hop fields of the Willamette Valley, hugs ‘Nothing For Granted.’ A stay at Lake Tekapo gave us the vibrant image of the Milky Way on the ‘Land of the Dark Night Sky.’ And the list goes on. This year, we snapped the picture adorning this special release the day after selecting hops with our friends in Garston, in the Southland of New Zealand. The legendary Brewster Hut towers high above the valley and shelters weary hikers on their way across the ridge, to the glaciers, and beyond. Brewster Hut is a true ‘New Zealand IPA’ inspired by the trip’s events. In America, we have Citra + Mosaic. In New Zealand, the most popular hop combination is Nelson & Rakau. We’ve tried our best to bring vibrancy and energy to this iconic New Zealand combo. Enjoy - this is available in all MA and NY locations today.
New Zealand is the Land of the Dark Night Sky. For the next stop on our journey, the Tree House hop selection team set aside an evening in Lake Tekapo to experience the grandeur of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest dark sky reserve and gain a deeper understanding of the inspiration for many of our beers. The dark-sky reserve accreditation recognizes that the night skies in the area of the reserve are entirely free of light pollution and ideal for star-gazing. For longtime Tree House fans, it’s no secret that the night sky has enthralled us and inspired some of our earliest beers. The Universe is Indifferent, Nervous Energy, Space & Time, Deep Space, Andromeda, Eternity, Persist, Spacetime Continuum, Spiritual Unrest, Acadia Nights, In Perpetuity, Brighter Than Starlight, and so many more have a celestial edge thanks to this fascination. So, you can imagine our excitement to find ourselves in such a special place. Fortunately, we were gifted the perfect sky-gazing night, free of humidity and clouds. But there was a catch - the moon was in a waxing gibbous phase, meaning it was two-thirds full. The only thing that can spoil the darkness of this night sky is such a bright moon. Some of the images in the carousel show the moon so bright it renders almost as brightly as daylight. The Milky Way was barely visible, so we waited. And waited, And waited. By 2 AM, following moonset,we were awash in a sky so clear with the celestial heavens above it was almost unbelievable. The Milky Way revealed itself across the sky above us, a majestic canvas so vibrant it felt within reach. For that fleeting moment, we were linked to an unknown past while affirming the preciousness and precariousness of our existence here. Like a solar eclipse, it would be impossible to capture this experience with photographs, but we did our best here. This space, specifically, inspired our two beers Land of the Dark Night Sky and Don’t Be Afraid. We hope you enjoy the images (swipe right - we saved the best for last) as much as we enjoyed making them and the beer to accompany them.
