Ruby Bay is a modern pilsner with notes of citrus, lime, sauvignon blanc, and ripe stone fruits. Perhaps our affinity for the New Zealand waterfront is born out of our travels along our home states coastline. A stones throw from the hop fields, situated between Motueka and Nelson, we found ourselves in awe of the idyllic beauty of Ruby Bay, a small alcove in the Tasman sea.
Ruby Bay is back. This modern Pilsner is brewed with a blend of New Zealand-grown hops. Nelson, Riwaka, and Peacharine shine through. It carries bright notes of citrus, lime, sauvignon blanc, and ripe stone fruit, and it finishes crisp. The name comes from a place we're deeply connected to. Between Motueka and Nelson, a stone's throw from the hop fields, there is a small cove on the Tasman Sea called Ruby Bay. We stopped there on one of our trips and did not want to leave. For years, a white heron named Hamish made the bay its home, and the locals came to know it. When it died, they raised a statue of it on the shore. It stands there still, watching the water. Maybe our affection for that waterfront comes from years spent along our own coastline at home. Either way, it stuck with us. Ruby Bay is a welcome addition to our growing line of dry-hopped lagers. It is a beer for a wandering mind and an adventurous spirit. We hope you enjoy it in good company and good health.
It's so strange that it's the middle of winter in New Zealand. Their polar opposite growing season, however, grants us a second harvest from the other side of the world, and we love using our freshly picked lots in our pilsners. Ruby Bay resides within Tasman Bay in the Nelson region of New Zealand. Mapua Wharf leads out into the bay, and this area is known for its charming shops, breakfast spots, and waterfront vistas. A White Heron graces the can for Ruby Bay, and the story of this majestic bird is heartwarming. Hamish, a native White Heron, visited the Mapua Wharf each winter from the 1980s to 2010 before perishing and is remembered fondly by local residents. Mapua sculptor Arthur Hawke says his sculpture of celebrity heron Hamish has almost replaced the real bird in the hearts and minds of its viewers. Each time we brew this beer, we reflect on this space, this majestic bird, and the energy of a region brimming with the hops we love so much. #productphotography #productphotodaily #photography #craftbeer #treehousebrewing #beergram #beerstagram #beersandcameras #beerlover #beerbeerbeer #beerme #beergeek #beertography #beernerd #fujifilm #gfx100II @fujifilmx_us@profoto
Milford Sound is our newest foray into wine barrel-aged lagers, accentuating the cross-section between oak, grape, and hops. Ruby Bay takes a secondary conditioning period in Sauvignon Blanc barrels where it achieves stunning clarity and mellow tannic notes from its wooden vessel. Peacharine, Riwaka, and Nelson intermingle with the bright stone fruit of Sauvignon Blanc, creating a liquid akin in its dryness to that of a mixed fermentation. Milford Sound is a labor of love that is at once approachable and endlessly complex. It is a beautiful beer.
